At Starfolk Tattoo, we believe that creating beautiful, lasting tattoos shouldn't have to come at such a high environmental cost.
The tattoo BUSINESS generates an enormous amount of waste. Between disposable plastic tubes, ink caps, protective barriers, razors, gloves, packaging, and other single-use tattoo supplies, even a relatively small tattoo shop can produce a surprising amount of trash every single day.
Most modern tattoo studios rely heavily on disposable plastic products. While some of these materials are necessary for maintaining proper hygiene and preventing cross-contamination, many conventional tattoo supplies are designed to be used once and then thrown away.
We know that there's a better way, it’s just more challenging.
As an eco-conscious tattoo shop in Nashville, our goal is to reduce unnecessary waste, minimize our reliance on single-use plastics, and incorporate more sustainable tattooing practices wherever possible, without compromising the health and safety of our clients.
Reducing Single-Use Plastics in Tattooing
One of the biggest environmental challenges facing the tattoo Business is its dependence on single-use plastics.
Traditional tattoo setups often involve disposable plastic barriers, plastic tattoo tubes, petroleum-based products, individually packaged supplies, and other materials that are difficult or impossible to recycle through conventional recycling programs.
At Starfolk Tattoo, reducing single-use plastic waste is one of our highest priorities.
Rather than simply replacing every plastic product with another disposable alternative, we look for opportunities to eliminate unnecessary waste altogether.
This means evaluating the materials we use, how they're manufactured, how they're packaged, and what happens to them after their useful life.
Reusable and Autoclavable Tattoo Equipment
One of the most effective ways to reduce waste is to replace disposable products with reusable alternatives whenever it is safe and practical to do so.
We incorporate autoclavable tattoo equipment and reusable materials into our procedures wherever appropriate.
An autoclave is a specialized sterilization machine that uses pressurized steam to sterilize properly cleaned, heat-resistant equipment. This allows certain tattoo tools and materials to be safely reused rather than discarded after a single appointment. This is the same method used in every Doctor’s or Dentist’s Office around the world.
By using reusable, sterilizable equipment, we can significantly reduce our dependence on disposable plastic tattoo supplies while maintaining the strict sanitation standards required in a professional tattoo studio.
Of course, not every tattoo product can or should be reused. Items that cannot be safely cleaned and sterilized must still be discarded appropriately.
Our philosophy is simple: reuse when it's safe, reduce whenever possible, and dispose of materials responsibly when necessary.
Compostable and Biodegradable Tattoo Supplies
In situations where disposable tattoo products are necessary, we prioritize more environmentally responsible alternatives when suitable options are available.
This includes incorporating compostable and biodegradable tattoo supplies into our daily operations.
Unlike conventional petroleum-based plastics, some plant-derived materials are designed to break down through biological processes under specific conditions.
However, it's important to understand that biodegradable and compostable don't necessarily mean the same thing.
Compostable materials require appropriate composting conditions, and many commercially compostable products will not break down effectively in a landfill or backyard compost pile.
We aim to select materials based not only on how they're marketed, but also on their practical environmental benefits and available disposal options. Examples of these materials are: PLA, Paper, Wheat and Corn-Based Alternatives.
Recycling Tattoo Supply Packaging and Plastics
Reducing waste also means taking responsibility for materials that cannot be reused.
We’re big on recycling the boxes and various containers that our supplies might be shipped within. Examples are shipping boxes and beverage cans and bottles.
